What we learned through making the film “Sight” that may be beneficial to Chinese Americans who also want to share their stories

How a national “Telling Our Stories” movement, unprecedented in U.S. history, was created in 2023-2024 involving 50,000 Chinese Americans, 500 free Sight film shows(FREE link: sight.drmingwang.com) and across 40 states in North America, resulting in the FIRST first-generation Chinese American immigrant story film that gained wide North America release (in 2,118 theaters, with U.S. domestic box office of $7.2 million), and what have we learned in this historical movement about how we can inspire more Chinese Americans to stand up, speak out and tell our stories in the future?

A decade ago, it was difficult to find quality faith-based entertainment. Today, though, such options are seemingly endless. 

Christian titles are available on platforms like Netflix and Prime Video, alongside dedicated faith-based streaming services. Meanwhile, Christian titles arrive almost every month in theaters.

And despite what you may have heard, the best films in this genre can stand up to the best of mainstream entertainment. Everything in the faith genre has leveled up -- the storytelling, the production quality, the performances. Today’s faith-based movies are light years ahead of yesteryear’s. 

Compiling a best-of list is always difficult. For starters, you have to ask: What is a Christian film? For this compilation, we’re using a straightforward definition: a movie with strong Christian themes. It also needs to be generally family-friendly. To keep it simple, this list only includes movies released in theaters.

Dr. Ming Wang is a Harvard and MIT graduate and one of the few laser eye surgeons in the world who holds a doctorate degree in laser physics. The film "Sight," the first generation Chinese-American immigrant film in American mainstream media, is based on Dr. Wang's autobiography "From Darkness to Sight." 

As a teenager, he fought poverty and hardship in China and came to America with only $50 in his pocket and knew very few English words. But he saw nothing but opportunity and earned two doctorate degrees, one in laser physics and one in medicine. He graduated with the highest honors from Harvard Medical School and MIT Magna Cum Laude.
